The Challenge
Design a Poster Featuring a Chosen Typeface
In my Typography class, we learned that every design tells a story, and the theme of the story can be communicated using the proper typeface. The typeface poster project was assigned to tell the story of the chosen font with the typeface as the main character, using history, aspects of the letterforms, color, and positioning. I chose the font Gimlet, a fun and geometric serif font. Not only did the name catch my attention, but the style of the font itself was just asking to be displayed.
The Work
Personifying Gimlet
The result is a playful representation of the quirky typeface. Elements of the font’s history are presented, including the date it was published and the designers, Nick Sherman and David J. Ross. The poster represents the typeface by displaying words with letters that are uniquely designed. It also highlights elements of the type form that I found interesting, like the asterisk and quotation marks.
